Wouxun KG-Q10H Review
Reviewing the Wouxun KG-Q10H Quad Band HT – A Feature-Packed Handheld Transceiver
Introduction
Welcome back to Hamshack Hero! I’m Evan (KI5WJV) and today we have an exciting review for you. I’ll be taking a closer look at the new Wouxun KG-Q10H Quad Band HT – a versatile handheld transceiver that covers 2 meters, 70 centimeters, 6 meters, and 1.25 meters (220 frequencies). This radio boasts a range of new features that set it apart from other Wouxun radios, including GPS, USB-C charging, dual push-to-talk, and a redesigned interface. In this review, we’ll assess its performance, usability, and value for money.
Unboxing the Ocean Quad Band HT
The Ocean Quad Band HT arrives in an attractive package, and in the box, you’ll find:
- The radio with its battery
- Six-meter and 1.25-meter antennas
- 2-meter and 70-centimeter antennas
- Hand strap, screws, and belt clip
- Charging dock and brick
- Owner’s manual and warranty card
The radio is available in red, green, and blue, but not black. I opted for the red variant, and the total cost at the time of purchase was $219.99 from buytwowayradios.com.
Power Output Test – Maximum Wattage on all 4 Bands
I performed a power output test on all four bands using a Surecomm SWR meter.
Here are the results for maximum wattage outputs on the “Ultra-High” mode:
- 6 meters: 1.1 Watts (Ultra High mode)
- 2 meters: 5.12-5.13 Watts (Ultra High mode)
- 1.25 meters: 1.5 Watts (Ultra High mode)
- 70 centimeters: 5.79 Watts (Ultra High mode)
The radio achieved the maximum rated output of 6 Watts on 70 centimeters. It was disappointing to see that 1.25 meters & 6 meters performance was under 2 watts, but it’s nice to know that at the very least, this radio can output on these added frequencies rather than the standard 2m/70cm bands like most other dual band radios on the market.
Features and Design
The Wouxun KG-Q10H Quad Band HT features a waterproof panel on the right side, protecting the Kenwood style microphone and headphone jack. It also includes a USB-C charging port, covered with a waterproof gasket, as well. This is a very convenient feature, although it’s worth noting that it might make repairs more complicated if the USB-C port were to malfunction since it is part of the radio body, and not built into the removable battery.
The radio comes with a flashlight button, alarm key, and an attach point for the hand strap. A standout feature is the integrated dual push-to-talk buttons on the left side of the radio, which allows users to transmit on different frequencies with ease.
GPS and Weather Alerts
The GPS functionality included with this radio is fairly basic. It has eight GPS tracking slots, allowing users to track up to eight other radios in the group that are transmitting their GPS coordinates with every transmission made.
Additionally, the Wouxun KG-Q10H Quad Band HT allows users to monitor NOAA weather frequencies for alerts, and the radio automatically switches to NOAA weather channels when warnings are issued if you enable that capability in the menus.
Audio Quality and Screen Customization
The audio quality of the internal speaker is on par with other Wouxun HT radios. It’s worth mentioning that Wouxun used a native English-speaking voice actor for the voice prompts. The screen offers ten different themes, with four custom theme options, allowing users to personalize their radio’s interface.
Conclusion
Overall, the Wouxun KG-Q10H Quad Band HT impressed me with its build quality, feature set, and audio performance. The GPS & NOAA functionality, dual push-to-talk buttons, and USB-C charging were standout features. Although the radio fell short of the maximum advertised 6 Watt power output on some bands, it still delivered solid performance.
At $219.99, the KG-Q10H offers good value for money and is a recommended choice for amateur radio enthusiasts looking for a feature-packed handheld transceiver that transmits on 70cm, 2 meters, 1.25 meters, and 6 meters.
